Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (formed in 1968 to present)

It was the amalgamation of Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers, Lancashire Fusiliers and the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). They took part in active service in Iraq during the Gulf War 1991 and again in 2003 occupying the city of Basra, Iraq. Over the next decade they carried out multiple operational tours of Iraq. They were deployed to Northern Ireland on ‘Operation Banner’ multiple times.

They deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 where they found themselves fighting off sustained Taliban attacks that lasted 107 days (the longest siege for British troops since WW2). Over the following years, elements of the regiment deployed on several occasions to Afghanistan where they saw heavy fighting including Helmand Province 2013.

They celebrate St George’s Day, and he features on the Regimental Colours and flags. The combined number of Victoria Crosses of the Fusiliers and ancestor regiments is 55. Of note, they were the first and last in WW1 AT Mons and North Russia and the famous “6 VCs Before Breakfast” at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.

The flag of England with the St George in the middle is flown at all Royal Regiment of Fusilier barracks.
