Charity ambassador, Major Andrew Miles
After a varied early career in sales and laboratory science, Andy joined the Royal Navy as a Medical assistant in 1998, serving in the Royal Hospital Haslar in Gosport. He transferred to the laboratory cadre, and continued to serve in that capacity at Royal Navy Hospital Gibraltar, attached to a Field Hospital in Iraq, and as a Chief onboard HMS ARK ROYAL. He was commissioned into the Royal Army Medical Corps in 2011, and completed two tours in Afghanistan, including acting as the Officer in Command of the busy blood transfusion laboratory at the British Military Hospital. Since then he has worked in Birmingham overseeing the delivery and safety of blood for UK Armed Forces worldwide.
He is a State Registered Biomedical Scientist, member of the Chartered Quality Institute, and is a qualified Project Manager. He has authored and co-authored academic articles relating to military blood transfusion.
Now approaching retirement from the military Andy is delighted to be associated with Care for Veterans and hopes to use his experience to further that proud cause.
